Active and Passive?
Active requires Phantom Power or a battery supply.
Passive does not require a power supply.
Direct Box
If you are running a passive pickup in you acoustic instrument, be it guitar or ukulele you will need to run a Direct Box (DI).

featuring a five-band equalizer with tunable notch and midrange controls,
adjustable gain and phase inversion. Our proprietary Quasi-Passive EQ
circuitry is totally transparent and allows control over voicing without
sacrificing tone -- a big advance over conventional equalizers. In short, the
Para D.I. Is engineered to bring out the best in any pickup.
This is the DI/Preamp that I'm using with my ukuleles.
The small L.R. Baggs Gigpro preamp clips to your belt loop and works with almost any type of pickup or mini-mic eliminating the need for active circuitry (and batteries) on your prize guitar. Its Class A input, adjustable gain, and quasi-passive EQ are modeled after the ever-popular Para Acoustic DI. The Gigpro will make any pickup sound better and put fingertip control of your sound right at your side.
