A satin Bower bird
(male) above

TOTALLY random stuff I've collected on the web and doesn't have a place in the jazz guitar, ukulele or main publishing pages on the site.

I remember seeing a this bird on TV years ago. And, it stuck with me. Some of the strangest things get into ones's long term memory. Good for Trivial Pursuit but not much more.

Just like the Bower bird that collects a variety of objects like shells, leaves, flowers, feathers, stones, berries, and even discarded plastic items. A bower's U-shaped nest, a structure of sticks and leaves can include hundreds of these objects. The bird will spend hours carefully sorting and arranging his collection, with each thing in a specific place.

All of this to attract the female Bower bird. The things we do!!!

In Central Eastern Polynesian cultures of the Pacific Ocean, tiki is a name given to large carvings of humanoid form. These carvings often serve to mark the boundaries of sacred or significant sites. The word appears as tiki in New Zealand Māori, Cook Islands Māori, Tuamotuan, and Marquesan; as ti'i in Tahitian, and as ki'i in Hawaiian. The word has not been recorded from the languages of Western Polynesia or of Rapanui (Easter Island).

Tiki culture refers to a mid-20th-century theme used in Polynesian-style restaurants and clubs originally in the United States and then, to a lesser degree, around the world. The connection to Tiki, a character in the mythology of portions of the South Pacific, is tenuous at best.

( from artist's site ) - From 1963 to 1976 my family moved four times, but always in the same area: Just off of Rosemead Blvd in Southern California's San Gabriel valley. From the back seat of their 64 Impala, I was amazed by the nightly drive past all of the mid-century Architectural landmarks; by day, peddling my bike, it seemed quite natural to see huge Tiki Gods, waterfalls, and volcanoes in front of A-frames. But by the mid 80's, when I started buying my own Tiki mugs, I realized there was something odd about seeing the Polynesian style transplanted to Southern California. Nevertheless, my attraction to it kept growing and growing, and when Sven Kirsten explained to me in 1992 that there was a California Tiki style -- at once modern, primitive and cartoonish -- it was like an epiphany; it all made sense. A couple of months later someone dumped a load of palm logs in a vacant lot down the road, and I took some home to carve Tiki stuff for my home bar. Two weeks later I had my first mask and pole designs (as seen in Tiki News #1). Soon after I decided I needed my own Tiki mug, so the ceramics came next; currently we're up to design #45. I have always held the forgotten masters in the highest regard, so it was an honor when, in the late 90's, Truus and I met Mr Westerhaver, creator of the legendary Witco furniture company. It turned out we had both attended Art Center School Of Design in Pasadena, although 40 years apart. Due to his advice and support I started my newest, burnt-wood carving style. I don't know what will happen next in my art, but I know there will be tikis in it.

(from artist's site) - My work reflects my interests in mid century artifacts deco style, tiki lounge, atomic futurism to mention just a few. Images of past pop culture mixed with current day pop culture provide an endless source of inspiration and possibilities for me. This creative energy is what I thrive on and live for.

( from artist's site ) - Santa Cruz Tikis are the passion of local carver Wilhelm Zilliacus. When not riding the waves at Pleasure Point, Will can be found wielding a chainsaw and turning reclaimed redwood into powerful polynesian-style sculpture. Will began carving Tikis in the late nineties, after hauling home a sizeable driftwood log from a nearby beach. He's not sure which South-Pacific deity possessed him to begin carving into the wood, but he was quite happy with the resulting sculpture, which still resides in his garden.

Artist Info

(from WidipediA: site) - Josh Agle (born August 31, 1962) is an American artist known by the nickname SHAG, which he first used to sign his paintings in 1987. The nickname is derived from the last two letters of his first name, and the first two letters of his last name.[1] He's best known for comical, richly-colored cocktail and tiki-themed scenes reminiscent of the slick commercial art of the 1950s to mid-1960s. SHAG started out as a freelance commercial illustrator, primarily for independent record labels, in the late 1980s and early 1990s before galleries and collectors began to take notice of his works. He had his first solo gallery exhibition in 1997,[1] and has since had other shows in the United States, Japan and Australia. He's the author and illustrator of several books about tiki culture and cocktail recipes. He spent the first eight years of his life in Oahu, Hawaii, and currently lives in the hills overlooking Southern California.

Surfluke-SML.png(from artist's site) - As close as I can figure it started back in about 1966. My uncle was a surfer, and he once gave my dad a three foot stone Tiki as a gift. My dad put it out under the big tree next to my play house, where it stood for almost twenty years until said tree was cut down and the Tiki disappeared. But back then that Tiki was about as close to magic as it gets. It made an impression I guess. I have been carving Tikis as long as I can remember, but things really got going in 1993 on the day my wife and I drove up north for our honeymoon. We brought along a Tiki to leave at the house we rented, and on the long drive the question arose, aside from myself, where can one get a good Tiki? I had scoured the good will, and all the local thrift stores, but it was hit and miss, and the local Tiki bars turned up nothing, souvenir-wise. There was, of course, Hawaii, but that was too involved for the average potential Tiki seeker. I mean, where can a normal working Joe go to get a decent Tiki in a hurry?
